In this paper, I present two ways of conceiving a genealogical explanation of the concept of knowledge. The first one is through the epistemic state of nature hypothesis developed by Edward Craig, according to which knowledge is understood as a concept evolved from the concept of a good informant. After considering Craig’s project, I draw a parallel between this approach and Miranda Fricker’s value-laden account of the same concept. Then, I present and discuss Fricker’s social take on Craig’s genealogy, (...) in which she suggests that the notions of a good informant and of knowledge are necessarily dependent on the establishment of a credibility norm, and that this norm should be viewed as inherently political. Lastly, I defend an illustration, through Kristie Dotson’s work, of how both genealogical approaches could explain and offer solutions to failings in the normativity of our epistemic systems. This paper works with the modern concept of the geological hotspot track – the building processes and movements of volcanic island chains – applied strategically to one of its illustrative formations, the Madeira Archipelago. By analogy, however, the concept works equally well to describe the important early 19th-century scientific knowledge-building activity that produced Charles Lyell's On the Geology of Some Parts of Madeira (1854). A central section of the paper uncovers the contributions to knowledge of this geology before Lyell's, and (...) in particular, Excursions of Madeira and Porto Santo (1825) by Mr [sic] T. Edward Bowdich. A thorough examination of this text then constitutes an important case study for literal and figurative investigation of geological hotspot tracks. The main argument proposed is that current specialist research forgets its submerged and longer histories to its detriment. Insights contained in older information often supply reminders of the key questions and contributions from the past that provide checks and balances for further developments of a field. By promoting multi-level, multi-stranded and multi-lingual investigation of the history of 19th-century geology in Madeira before Lyell (1854) as central to hotspot track research, this paper marks nodal conditions that constitute advancement in critical knowledge-building within and outside the discipline of geology. Does talking about the triumph of the 1986 People Power EDSA Revolution still make sense nowadays? When the ideals of this glorious revolution are now nothing but contents of Philippine history textbooks and items of the culture industry, do we still need to re-imagine it? These are some of the reflective questions that will challenge and guide this paper‟s architecture. In what follows, the author will push all the possibilities for a Nietzschean re- thinking of the EDSA Revolution as “ (...) the experience of difference and an exemplar of ascending life. ” In the first part, an account of the nature of EDSA revolution will be illustrated; while in the second, the principle of the „ Will to Power ‟ and „ Eternal Return ‟ will be explained using Gille s Deleuze‟s rhizomatic eyeglasses. In the third, the narrative of the revolution, i.e., the process on how the Epifanio Delos Santo Avenue turned into an arena for collective-political action will be delineated. Furthermore, the concept of difference will be utilized in explaining the dynamic occurrences produced by the Dionysian assemblage of Filipino bodies. In the last, the challenge of a different return of the said revolution will be explained. (shrink)

The primary objective of this study is to provide a description of the major ideas about void space within and beyond the world that were formulated between the fourteenth and early eighteenth centuries. The second part of the book - on infinite, extracosmic void space - is of special significance. The significance of Professor Grant's account is twofold: it provides the first comprehensive and detailed description of the scholastic Aristotelian arguments for and against the existence of void space; and it (...) presents (again for the first time) an analysis of the possible influence of scholastic ideas and arguments on the interpretations of space proposed by the nonscholastic authors who made the Scientific Revolution possible. The concluding chapter of the book is unique in not only describing the conceptualizations of space proposed by the makers of the Scientific Revolution, but in assessing the role of readily available scholastic ideas on the conception of space adopted for the Newtonian world. Na semântica ockhamiana, o predicado ‘verdadeiro’ deriva de uma outra relação semântica mais fundamental, a relação de suposição. O autor mostra como esta relação de dependência entre dois predicados semânticos figura na análise das condições de verdade de proposições passadas, um modelo que pode ser estendido a proposições futuras e possíveis. O texto procura indicar como a explicação das condições de verdade de proposições possíveis situa a semântica das modalidades aléticas em continuidade com a semântica de proposições não presentes. Este (...) último ponto ganha em interesse se o colocarmos ao lado de um outro aspecto da teoria modal ockhamiana, a saber, o fato de modalidades serem definidas como todo termo que pode ser predicado de proposições inteiras. Como conclusão, o autor expõe os diferentes níveis de análise de modalidades aléticas, dentro do quadro teórico ockhamiano. (shrink)

Discusses Indian Buddhist philosophy in three phases of its development.

O presente ensaio tem por finalidade abordar filosoficamente o cenário de medo e desconfiança instaurado no Brasil e no mundo durante a recente pandemia do COVID-19, a partir de algumas considerações sobre os fundamentos políticos da moderna filosofia de Thomas Hobbes. A questão central tratada pelo trabalho é a influência do medo sobre as ações humanas e políticas dentro de uma situação de desarmonia social avessa aos princípios democráticos. Em primeiro lugar, buscaremos mostrar como o medo é considerado pela filosofia (...) hobbesiana como sendo um sentimento religioso capaz de regular as ações e o entendimento dos indivíduos tanto fora quanto dentro do Estado civil. Em segundo lugar, buscamos mostrar como a maximização do medo social pode resultar em uma desconfiança generalizada entre as pessoas e entre os poderes políticos que apenas promove as crenças e superstições dos discursos religiosos e ideológicos mais radicais. Partindo das considerações de Hobbes sobre os fundamentos da soberania civil, investigaremos algumas relações fundamentais entre o medo, a política e a religião nas bases da moderna política estatal. Podemos dizer que, em linhas gerais, este ensaio busca mostrar como um desentendimento do Estados civil consigo mesmo e com seus poderes constitutivos instaurou na população brasileira, desnorteada politicamente pela crise causada pela pandemia do novo coronavírus, uma condição de medo e desconfiança semelhante ao estado de natureza bélico, descrito por Hobbes no _Leviatã_. Este trabalho é uma exposição dos primeiros resultados de uma pesquisa de mestrado em andamento, cujo objetivo principal é estabelecer uma reflexão sobre a constituição de uma filosofia do trágico no Brasil. A filosofia do trágico nasce na modernidade sob a influência do idealismo alemão e se intensifica, com Nietzsche, como alternativa à racionalidade conceitual da ciência moderna e à hierarquia dos valores proposta pela moral judaico-cristã. Assim como o jovem Nietzsche encontra na Grécia Antiga o fundamento para a elaboração (...) de sua filosofia do trágico – o dionisíaco – é possível que possamos extrair da cosmovisão da cultura yorùbá, que até hoje sobrevive em território africano e em território brasileiro no processo litúrgico do culto aos orìsà, elementos que permitam a formulação do nosso próprio pensamento trágico. Tanto em Nietzsche como na cultura yorùbá, o corpo é valorizado como instância primordial na produção do saber. Assim, deveremos observar como a produção de conceitos a partir da cosmovisão yorùbá pode contribuir como alternativa aos saberes que privilegiam em sua base o que Derrida apontou como “etnocentrismo” e “logocentrismo”. A teologia esforça-se por repertoriar e sistematizar o que a revelação e a fé trazem ao crente sobre o problema do sentido da história, da peregrinação através do tempo da humanidade pensada em seu conjunto. Ela enfatiza, não tanto o conhecimento, mas o estado espiritual de felicidade ao qual a humanidade deve ascender antes do fim da vida na terra. Os modernos não aceitam a proposta teológica e têm por ambição descentralizar a história tradicionalmente ordenada por uma visão cristocêntrica do (...) mundo. O historiador, isentando-se da facção, assume o discurso racional sobre a trajetória dos humanos a partir de um novo núcleo referencial interpretativo, a saber, a ideia de humanidade. Voltaire apresenta-se como legítimo representante dessa perspectiva. A história sob o prisma voltairiano é colocada como problema e não como dogmática com características de uma aquisição definitiva. O problema histórico é o de compreender o mundo atual e a humanidade nele inserida. O objetivo, portanto, do trabalho foi apresentar a proposta teológica para a história e a crítica a ela desenvolvida por Voltaire, de forma a evidenciar a originalidade da abordagem moderna do fenômeno histórico. In the course of his long development, Kant's concept of matter changed somewhat, while his concept of scientific explanation changed considerably. Both developments achieved a coherent integration in Kant's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science. Using this developmental background, the present paper argues that the Foundations should be interpreted as an attempted rational reconstruction of the mechanics of Newton and Euler. Kant attempted to do this by constructing a concept of matter that would confer a Leibnizian intelligibility on Newtonian mechanics, and (...) also accord with Kant's theories on the nature of concepts and their role in scientific explanation. Neste trabalho, argumentamos ser a proposta historiográfica de Ubiratan D’Ambrosio (1932-2021), presente em seu Programa Etnomatemática, capaz de nos apoiar nos processos de valorização da historicidade e da diversidade cultural brasileiras. Partindo de uma pesquisa teórica, de abordagem qualitativa e bibliográfica, utilizamos alguns aspectos da perspectiva de D’Ambrosio para fazer o estudo de um episódio histórico do século XVII, baseado na tradução de um livro publicado em 1614 por um missionário francês, que participou do projeto de colonização do Brasil no (...) que ficou conhecido como França Equinocial. Nesse sentido, ao final, apresentamos uma discussão de três trechos dessa tradução que evidenciam conhecimentos astronômicos de um grupo Tupinambá que vivia no Maranhão nessa época. Com isso, buscamos oferecer subsídios para que docentes de Ciências e Física implementem propostas na Educação Básica na perspectiva das Histórias das Ciências especializadas, buscando evitar estereótipos e abordagens ingênuas, de modo a ir ao encontro, por exemplo, da Lei 11.645/2008, a qual exige a inclusão de estudos sobre história e cultura afro-brasileira e indígena em todo o currículo escolar do Brasil. In this paper I intend to classify the modes of temporality and to place History within the Sciences of Spirit according to Edith Stein's thought. Its specific treatment refers temporality and History to lays of the person (body, psyche, spirit). While the passives associations of immanent time correspond to corporal and psychic levels of the person, the historical succession is made possible by the intentions which derive from the spirit. And thus as history consists of a unity not reducible to (...) conscious intentions, so the person is also a unity not entirely transparent to itself. (shrink)

UMA ANÁLISE CRÍTICA DA ESTRUTURA REGULATÓRIA DO SETOR NUCLEAR BRASILEIRO.

La misión educativa del maestro, del profesor de primeras letras, fue uno de los temas pedagógicos al que Unamuno, el insigne rector de la Universidad de Salamanca, más páginas de análisis y reflexión dedicó a lo largo de su producción ensayística. El presente artículo, centrado en dicho tema, procura desvelar la concepción unamuniana del maestro, en cuanto a su misión de promover la formación de una concepción unitaria del saber en sus alumnos. Para nuestro autor, la fragmentación del saber era (...) un grave error educativo al que había que combatir con vehemencia. En contra de dicha fragmentación, propuso, inspirado en su formación romántica, una visión holista e integrada de los saberes impartidos en clase a partir de la cosmovisión étnica del pueblo español (intrahistoria). No pudiendo haber educaciones ideológicamente neutrales, sólo el trasfondo espiritual de la comunidad patria a la que el alumno pertenece podría unificar el saber escolar que tendría siempre que ser consustancial al espíritu del propio pueblo (Volksgeist) en cuanto expresión individualizada del alma de la propia humanidad (Allgeist). Y es aquí donde se hace sentir la educación de talante nacionalista propuesta por Unamuno, siendo cierto que lo nacional en el autor es siempre concebido como puerta para lo universal. (shrink)

O presente artigo procura determinar a poiesis educativa unamuniana, ou seja, as técnicas de ensino e de aprendizagem propostas por Unamuno para o ensino espanhol das primeiras décadas do século XX. Num primeiro momento, centrar-se-á no eixo professor-aluno. Para o autor, o decisivo é que a relação que une professor e aluno não seja austera como na escolástica, na qual os referidos elementos permaneciam afastados entre si, mas que fosse estruturada numa espécie de amor filial. A sua proposta pedagógica consiste, (...) portanto, na substituição do velho paradigma educativo escolástico por um personalismo educacional que fosse capaz de conceber professor e aluno como pai e filho em espírito. Num segundo momento, valoraremos as suas propostas pedagógicas para o eixo professor-saber, que, na sua perspetiva, deveria deixar de ser pensado como um templo do saber para passar a ser concebido como um mediador das aprendizagens, como o demonstra a sua famosa definição como agitador de espíritos. Depois, e em relação direta com os resultados anteriores, analisaremos a forma como o autor estrutura o eixo aluno-saber. Unamuno, ao recusar a conceção escolástica de discente como recipiente vazio, considera que este deveria aprender mais procedimentos que conteúdos, de tal forma que fosse capaz de procurar por si mesmo o saber que necessita, com constância, esforço e trabalho. E, num último momento, deslindaremos as suas sui generis conceções epistemológicas de saber e verdade céticas. (shrink)

Sometimes, when comparing a pair of items, it appears that neither is better than the other, nor that they are equally good, relative to a certain value that they bear. Cases of this kind have come to be referred to as superhard comparisons. What grounds superhard comparisons? On the dominant views, held by Joseph Raz and Ruth Chang, they are grounded, at least partially, in the failure of the three classic value relations—‘better than’, ‘worse than’, and ‘equally good’. On an (...) alternative view, which might be called the vagueness view, first developed by John Broome, they are grounded in vagueness about which of the classic value relations holds between the items. In this paper, I pay special attention to superhard comparisons in the context of choice and develop a novel argument against the dominant views on the basis of an account of decision-making under vagueness in ‘better than’. The upshot is that a new vagueness view emerges. (shrink)

The modal object calculus is the system of logic which houses the (proper) axiomatic theory of abstract objects. The calculus has some rather interesting features in and of itself, independent of the proper theory. The most sophisticated, type-theoretic incarnation of the calculus can be used to analyze the intensional contexts of natural language and so constitutes an intensional logic. However, the simpler second-order version of the calculus couches a theory of fine-grained properties, relations and propositions and serves as a framework (...) for defining situations, possible worlds, stories, and fictional characters, among other things. In the present paper, we focus on the second-order calculus. The second-order modal object calculus is so-called to distinguish it from the second-order modal predicate calculus. Though the differences are slight, the extra expressive power of the object calculus significantly enhances its ability to resolve logical and philosophical concepts and problems. (shrink)

Alexander Herzen was the most outstanding figure in the early period of the Russian revolutionary movement. Lenin claimed him as a forerunner of the Bolsheviks, and Soviet scholars have sought to establish his latent sympathy with Marxism. In the west on the other hand, he has been seen as a precursor of Solzhenitsyn, the personification of protest against all forms of oppression. Dr Acton provides a compelling intellectual biography. The focus is on the years between 1847 and 1863. Herzen's ideas (...) are set in the context of those political developments and dramatic private experiences that affected his outlook. His profound faith in human nature and in the inevitable triumph of socialism was undermined not only by the failure of the revolutions of 1848, but even more deeply by personal catastrophe - the discovery of the infidelity of his beautiful wife Natalie. This dual blow, Dr Acton shows, had a decisive impact upon Herzen's approach to Russian problems. It lay at the root of the ambivalent attitude he adopted towards peasant revolution in the critical period of Emancipation. (shrink)

Implicit in the scottish tradition is a metaphilosophy of commonsense which deserves as much attention as that recently given to scottish presentative realism and agent causality. The author articulates this metaphilosophy by (a) sketching a systematic metaphilosophy of commonsense, (b) considering to what extent thomas reid fits this pattern, And (c) deciding to what extent asa mahan, One of the ablest of the american realists, Fits it. The result is a characterization of a coherent scottish metaphilosophy still worthy of consideration. (...) He also explores the question whether the metaphilosophy that emerges from (b) and (c) is part of an ongoing tradition. It has been suggested that there are important similarities between the scottish view and g e moore's concept of analysis. While he agrees that there are analogies he stresses the disanalogies as more enlightening about the nature of both. (shrink)
